A strong positive can show up in as little as one minute but for a negative result you should wait for up to 5 minutes to confirm the result is negative. This is because the urine needs time to move across a wick.
If, at the early stages of pregnancy, there is little hCG present it will take longer for a sufficient amount to cross the test line and produce a coloured result.
