The vagina has good bacteria (lactobacilli) and bad bacteria (pathogens).
They normally live side by side. The growth of the pathogens is mainly kept in check by the lactobacilli who keep the vaginal pH low.
This balance can be disturbed by a variety of things: having a period, antibiotics, stress, vaginal douching. At any given time around 10% of women have an imbalance to a certain degree. Half of them will have no symptoms.
Whilst the body can restore this imbalance it can sometimes take some time and the pathogens can grow. Research suggests that if that time coincides with trying to conceive the conditions for conception may be affected.
The Zestica Conception Gel works in the way that the woman's body normally works.
Lactobacilli produce lactic acid that keep the vaginal pH low. When there is an imbalance, insufficient lactic acid is produced. Zestica Conception Gel contains lactic acid and instantly restores the normal vaginal pH.
Lactobacilli need a nutrient to grow (glycogen). When there is an imbalance there is often insufficient glycogen for the lactobacilli to restore themselves.
Zestica Conception Gel contains glycogen so your lactobacilli restore themselves.
The instructions will tell you on which days to use the gel. Depending on your cycle length you will use a daily single-use applicator for up to 6 days before ovulation.
This is a user-friendly applicator, used before going to bed.
A further 4 applicators are provided for use after ovulation. This is to maintain the balance throughout the entire process.
During many years of use no side effects have been reported with this type of product. Both active ingredients (lactic acid and glycogen) are normally produced by the body.
Some women report a slight stinging sensation but this disappears. This could be due to small cracks or lesions in the vaginal wall (e.g. after a recent episode of thrush).
If the stinging does not disappear: check the potential cause with your doctor.
